Welcome to the World of Warcraft in School Wiki

Members of The LegacyThis is a collaborative workspace for the development of instructional items for the use of the MMORPG, World of Warcraft, in a school setting.  Please take a moment to explore the various sections of the site and if you would like to contribute, please email Lucas Gillispie at lucas AT edurealms.com.

The original focus of this project was to develop a curriculum for an after school program or "club" for at-risk students at the middle and/or high school level.  This program would use the game, World of Warcraft, as a focal point for exploring Writing/Literacy, Mathematics, Digital Citizenship, Online Safety, and would have numerous projects/lessons intended to develop 21st-Century skills.  Because of the success of the first year's implementation as an after school program, the program is now being implemented as a language arts elective for middle schoolers designed to provide enrichment for students at all levels.

All project materials, including a fully-developed language arts course, aligned to middle grades standards, will be made available under a creative commons license upon completion.  The goal is to not only demonstrate the viability of game-based learning using commercial games, but to also provide a foundation or template upon which similar projects can be built.

PLEASE NOTE - All portions of this wiki are open and visible.  You don't have to "request access" to be able to read anything here.  However, if you are interested in contributing, and we want you to, when you request access, please let me know your name, if you work for an education-based organization, and what you might like to contribute.

Current Status/News

8/5/2011 - Gillispie - Added a Tutorials for Teachers section with videos introducing them to WoW!

8/4/2011 - Gillispie - The 3DGameLab for Educators is underway!  We're excited to be involved in this exciting project from Boise State!  Peggy and I are hosting a three week introduction to using WoW with students as part of the camp.  We're having a blast!

8/4/2011 - Gillispie - Peggy and I will be presenting again at Games in Education 2011 in New York!  This is a great conference and truly exemplifies the place where "the rubber meets the road" that we need more of when it comes to using video games in the classroom.  If you haven't registered, there's still time!

8/4/2011 - Gillispie - So many things going on!  First our presentation at ISTE 2011 was incredible.  We received very positive feedback from the audience and the general consensus seemed to be, "Yes, we really can do this and here's nearly everything we need to get started."  There were many great informal conversations about the project throughout as interest builds.  We're hoping that more schools will be joining us soon!

6/17/2011 - Gillispie - After months of work, our World of Warcraft curriculum is here.  As with all things education-related, consider it a Beta version.  We're still learning, tweaking, and coming up with new ideas.  Craig Lawson and I are really excited to share this with anyone who wants to use it.  It contains just about everything you need to duplicate our program.  Inside you'll find all of the learning quests we created, aligned to 8th grade Common Core standards, and with instructor notes and relevant online resources.  Since it was originally designed in Moodle, it should be simple to transfer into a Moodle shell of your own or any other platform.  We're releasing it under a Creative Commons Non-Commercial Attribution License.  If you decide to implement a similar program, let us know.  We want to grow this community!

6/10/2011 - Gillispie - Our kids have finally wrapped up their machinima projects!  They did great work, especially considering they'd none had any prior experience with filming and editing.  Check out their awesome movie intro/trailers on the Student Machinima page.

5/18/2011 - Gillispie - Student work is underway on their Machinima Projects.  Students randomly drew a number of story elements and are creating movie trailers for a film that incorporates them.  Hoping to make the June 1st deadline for submission to the ISTE Machinima Festival.

12/17/2010 - Sheehy - This is just too cool not to mention! Think about the collaborative opportunites. Thin about the complexities of this CORPORATION.  What position would you aspire to?  Designer? Artist? Coder? Musician? Writer? Historian? The list goes on and on....

Reflections on Play, Pedagogy, and World of Warcraft in Educause Magazine

By Landon K. Pirius and Gill Creel

Great Article!   Key Takeaways:

  • The video game World of Warcraft was the text studied, the laboratory, and the classroom for the online course "Warcraft: Culture, Gender, and Identity" at Inver Hills Community College.
  • The overarching goals of the course involved using the game's immersive environment, learning strategies, and culture to encourage and support student learning.
  • In addition to achieving the intended course outcomes, students successfully transferred the concepts they learned between the real and the virtual worlds.

(9/27/2010) - Gillispie - Very excited to welcome Seminole County School System, Florida, to the project.
