Welcome to the World of Warcraft in School Wiki

Members of The LegacyThis is a collaborative workspace for the development of instructional items for the use of the MMORPG, World of Warcraft, in a school setting.  Please take a moment to explore the various sections of the site and if you would like to contribute, please email Lucas Gillispie at lucas AT edurealms.com.

The original focus of this project was to develop a curriculum for an after school program or "club" for at-risk students at the middle and/or high school level.  This program would use the game, World of Warcraft, as a focal point for exploring Writing/Literacy, Mathematics, Digital Citizenship, Online Safety, and would have numerous projects/lessons intended to develop 21st-Century skills.  Because of the success of the first year's implementation as an after school program, the program is now being implemented as a language arts elective for middle schoolers designed to provide enrichment for students at all levels.

All project materials, including a fully-developed language arts course, aligned to middle grades standards, will be made available under a creative commons license upon completion.  The goal is to not only demonstrate the viability of game-based learning using commercial games, but to also provide a foundation or template upon which similar projects can be built.

PLEASE NOTE - All portions of this wiki are open and visible.  You don't have to "request access" to be able to read anything here.  However, if you are interested in contributing, and we want you to, when you request access, please let me know your name, if you work for an education-based organization, and what you might like to contribute.

10/25/2010 - Gillispie - Getting the Alienware laptops imaged has been challenging.  Our awesome technicians managed to get a viable image (that includes all of the Alienware UI perks and mods) and the most up-to-date version of WoW created.  Hopefully, we'll be pushing out to the laptops soon.

10/21/2010 - Gillispie - The Aliens have landed!  Our Alienware m11x laptops arrived today.  So far, they are amazing.  Our students are going to be really excited about the customized lighting, not to mention how well they will run World of Warcraft.  I've spent the biggest part of the day getting them inventoried and helping our awesome technical department here in Pender County Schools build an image for them.  The image is mostly built.  Now, we're just downloading/installing World of Warcraft.  I'll add more un-boxing pictures soon!  And, again, a huge thanks to the Breneman Jaech Foundation for making this possible!!

Reflections on Play, Pedagogy, and World of Warcraft in Educause Magazine

By Landon K. Pirius and Gill Creel

Great Article!   Key Takeaways:

  • The video game World of Warcraft was the text studied, the laboratory, and the classroom for the online course "Warcraft: Culture, Gender, and Identity" at Inver Hills Community College.
  • The overarching goals of the course involved using the game's immersive environment, learning strategies, and culture to encourage and support student learning.
  • In addition to achieving the intended course outcomes, students successfully transferred the concepts they learned between the real and the virtual worlds.

(9/27/2010) - Gillispie - Very excited to welcome Seminole County School System, Florida, to the project.

(9/27/2010) - Gillispie - Added an Implementation Page for Accounts with information and tips on how to manage multiple student accounts.

(9/16/2010) - Gillispie - WoWinSchool: A Hero's Journey is entering its fourth week at Cape Fear Middle School.  Already the students have begun reading their accompanying novel, The Hobbit and have set out on their own heroic journey as an avatar in World of Warcraft.  Housing all of the assignments in Moodle has been a huge plus as well and the students, for the most part, have adapted well to the online course model.  Suffern Middle School's program is underway as well.  If you're interested in seeing what a typical weekly module in Moodle looks like, take a look at this presentation:

(8/19/2010) - Gillispie - Great week at Games in Education Symposium in Albany, NY!  Below are the presentations that Peggy and I did related to the program.  Additional session resources can be found at http://www.edurealms.com.

(6/24/2010) - Gillispie - It's incredible how fast the year came and went.  We learned so much from our students in this project we can't begin to share it all.  So now for the exciting news:  WoWinSchool will be offered as an elective, 7th grade language-arts course in the 2010-2011 school year!  The challenge ahead lies in creating the materials for the course.  Here's where we're headed:

  • The course will be built entirely in Moodle so that it's completely modular, portable, and digital (aka - Paperless!).
  • The elective course will be doubled up with a reading course so that our students are all reading the same novel together.  We are in the process of selecting our novel.
  • The course will focus on the "Hero's Journey" theme, drawing parallels from student experiences in World of Warcraft as well as characters in the chosen novel.
  • Once again, students from North Carolina and New York will work and play together, and we are looking for any other schools who might be interested in participating!
  • The course will use an XP and leveling system instead of grades.  (We may even do an achievement system.)
  • This course will be aligned to state and national standards.

There is a vast amount of work to do between now and the start of school and we'll be sharing everything here, so check back soon!
