In this assignment, we asked students to choose a character from the novel they're reading, The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien, and make a brief argument about what class and/or race they'd be if they were a character in World of Warcraft. They were encouraged to use references from the text as well as web-based resources to support their arguments. Writing samples were posted in a threaded discussion with opportunities for both peer and teacher feedback. Note: This was the students' first exposure to any form of research writing. Here are some examples:
Bilbo - The Rogue by Borconyx
I think that Bilbo would be a rogue, considering that his nickname is Burglar Baggins. I think this because "stealth is the first class ability a rogue can get"(Rogue 1).
Stealth is needed to be a good burglar because you can't wake the guards and you can`t make noise or the alarms will go off. Even Gandalf stated that " you look more like a burglar than a grocer"(Tolkien 18). Plus, Bilbo is smart. I think that would make him a rogue because rogues are intelligent enough to know that when you turn invisible that you need to be quiet because going invisible doesn't mean they can`t hear you.

Bilbo - The Rogue by Array
If Bilbo was in the game World of Warcraft, he would be a Rogue. The reason is because his job in The Hobbit is a burglar. His job is to scout and discover what is up ahead before the group continues. Rogues are usually very sneaky. Also, the play styles of Rogue's in the game are very similar to the way Bilbo goes about completing his job in the book, even though he can be clumsy at times.
The Talent tree spec that Bilbo would find most helpful is Subtlety. It compliments Rogues that like to stay in the shadows. "Rogues often initiate combat with a surprise attack from the shadows" ("Rogue Talents").
In The Hobbit, Gandolf says "I have chosen Mr. Baggins and that ought to be enough for all of you. If I say he is a Burglar, a Burglar he is ,or will be when the time comes." (Tolkien 116)

Smaug - The Warrior by Falcen
If Smaug were in the game, I think the class he would be is a warrior. "They are strong and quick on the battlefield. As such, they can deal large amounts of damage; they are also capable of withstanding large amounts of damage to protect other party members(Warriors)." Smaug has the characteristics of a warrior because he can destroy anything in his path and he is a skilled fighter.
The warrior class is perfect for Smaug because he can annihilate towns, cities, and armies who confront him. Warriors are strong and hard to kill or defeat. The quote I chose from the book The Hobbit is on page 226 in the 4th paragraph "I am armoured above and below with iron scales and hard gems. No blade can pierce me!" This quote tells that he can not be killed because he is well armoured.

Beorn - The Druid - by Dragstadon
Beorn is one of the many characters in The Hobbitand he is one of the easiest
to characterize in the game, World of Warcraft. Out of all of the
classes in the gameBeorn would have to be a Druid. In the bookGandalf
states that “He is a skin changer. He changes his skin: sometimes he is
a huge black bear, sometimes he is a great strong black haired man with
huge arms and a great beard.”(Tolkien 116). This statement is very
similar to a statement made on the World of Warcraft main
website, “As master shapeshifters, druids can take on the forms of a
variety of beasts, morphing into a bear, cat, storm crow, or sea lion
with ease.” ("Druid" 1). This statement proves my point perfectly,
it is plain to see that if Beorn was in the World of Warcraft he would
definitely be a Druid.
