Welcome to the World of Warcraft in School/MMO-School Wiki

Members of The LegacyThis is a collaborative workspace for the development of instructional items for the use of MMORPGs, like World of Warcraft, GuildWars2 and others, in a school setting.  Please take a moment to explore the various sections of the site and if you would like to contribute, please email Lucas Gillispie at lucas AT edurealms.com.

The original focus of this project was to develop a curriculum for an after school program or "club" for at-risk students at the middle and/or high school level.  This program would use the game, World of Warcraft, as a focal point for exploring Writing/Literacy, Mathematics, Digital Citizenship, Online Safety, and would have numerous projects/lessons intended to develop 21st-Century skills.  Because of the success of the first year's implementation as an after school program, the program is now being implemented as a language arts elective for middle schoolers designed to provide enrichment for students at all levels.  The program is spreading, too.  To date, twelve schools in the U.S. and Canada have used our materials and have joined the adventure.

All project materials, including a fully-developed language arts course, aligned to middle grades standards, is now available under a creative commons license here.  The goal is to not only demonstrate the viability of game-based learning using commercial games, but to also provide a foundation or template upon which similar projects can be built.

PLEASE NOTE - All portions of this wiki are open and visible.  You don't have to "request access" to be able to read anything here.  However, if you are interested in contributing, and we want you to, when you request access, please let me know your name, if you work for an education-based organization, and what you might like to contribute.

Current Status/News

10/4/19 - Sheehy - Honored to be bringing another group of HEROES into WoWinSchool!  Look for new members of The Legacy Guild on Sisters of Elune very soon!

Also, I wanted to recommend another book written by Dr. Matthew Farber highlighting three game-based teachers, myself included.  Very cool to be counted among the likes of Paul Durbasi and Steve Isaacs!

" Included are best practice recommendations from star game-based learning teachers, including Steve Isaacs, Peggy Sheehy, Michael Matera, Rafranz Davis, Zack Gilbert, and Paul Darvasi.

How are expert educators using games in their classrooms to give students agency, while also teaching 21st century skills, like empathy, systems thinking, and design thinking? This question has motivated Matthew Farber’s Game-Based Learning in Action: How an Expert Affinity Group Teaches with Games showcasing how one affinity group of K12 educators—known as “The Tribe”—teaches with games. They are transformational leaders outside the classroom, in communities of practice. They mentor and lead newcomers to game-based learning, as well as advise game developers, academics, and policymakers. Teachers in “The Tribe” do not teach in isolation—they share, support, and mentor each other in a community of practice. Farber shares his findings about the social practices of these educators. Game-Based Learning in Action details how the classrooms of expert game-based learning teachers function, from how they rollout games to how they assess learning outcomes.

There are plenty of lessons to be learned from the best practices of expert educators.  Included are best practice recommendations from star game-based learning teachers, including Steve Isaacs, Peggy Sheehy, and Paul Darvasi.  These teachers use games to provide a shared meaningful experience for students. Games are often the focal point of their instruction. "

5/25/17 - Gillispie - Schools Embrace Gaming - District Administrator Magazine - Great article, featuring the World of Warcraft in School project and addresses not only the content connections, but also the potential impact on social-emotional learning that games like WoW can provide.

2/29/2016 - Sheehy-  FUTURE SCHOOLS EXPO in Sydney, Australia have requested a Master Class about gaming in  school, and a  Keynote Address about the State of Play!  This   organization really know how to advertise --  Check out the  magazine  article  published last month(and I don't want to hear ONE comment about the    "Godmother of  Educational Gaming"     because we  can blame Greg Toppo for that!  If I'm the Godmother,  then what can we make Lucas?? The Grand Poobah?    I have thirty-  seven eager teachers signed up for the  class and will     report back about the day!

6/8/15 - Sheehy -

The Game Believes in You: How Digital Play Can Make Our Kids Smarter by Greg Toppo has been released and the reviews are stunning! This is a really important book for anyone who cares about education and WoWinSchool is one of the main topics in Chapter 7.

Greg Toppo has been visiting my school for years— literally years.  He’s clocked an amazing number of hours speaking with my heroes and, more importantly, listening to them–observing their play, their struggles with literacy, and their social interactions.  My dear friend, Marianne Malmstrom (@knowclue)  would be proud of Greg— for he truly did “Follow the Learning” but he did so by following the play.

8/13/2014 - Sheehy - Amazing educators and students in New Zealand and Australia "keen" on using games for learning and eager to head into Azeroth! How cool is it that I was able to teach the teachers in          Hobbiton!@!!  See Mt. Doom?  Check!

 Here's my favorite!

4/15.2014 - Gillispie - Lots of presentations about the project lately by both Peggy and me, including Foundations of Digital Games, Playful Learning - Ohio University, and more!  Also, the project is mentioned in this white paper on professional development from Common Sense Media:  Innovative Professional Development Helps Teachers Use Technology to Tackle CCSS.  (Article correction:  Sara Toothman was recognized as PCS Teacher of the Year, not I).

2-25-2014 -  Sheehy - Excited to be bringing WoW in School to the community attending the ASB Unplugged Conference!

2-24-2014 - Sheehy - Just learned I will be hosting a new WoWinSchool Spring Teacher Camp in 3D GameLab! EPIC Learning!

11-25-13 Sheehy- Proud to have fifty new heroes on the Sisters of Elune server!  That's right, the EPIC Learners from Room 339 are now proud residents of Azeroth!  We will have our Legacy Guild induction ceremony in a few weeks, once everyone gets some "traveling skills".   Please keep your eye out for them and be sure to give them a Hero's Welcome!

11-13-13 - Sheehy -  Most of the  WowinSchool group attended the Virtual Blizzcon Party here in Room 339 last week and we decided that we would share some of the most salient points about the upcoming expansion, Warlords of Draenor,  in hopes of bringing some of you GW2 folks home to Azeroth!

WHEN PAST AND PRESENT COLLIDE, THE FATE OF ALL WORLDS HANGS IN THE BALANCE...
(The Prophet Velan)

In order to do it any justice, I will quote from the experts at WoWHead.com"Chris Metzen, SVP of story and franchise development came on stage to introduce the next chapter in World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor.  According to Metzen, the conflict coming will be the Alliance’s “finest hour,” mixing in all the history, and context of the game, by confronting the “ghosts of the past.”  “We have been thinking a lot about Warcraft, what makes it distinct, what makes it tick and about the early days,” he said (thanks CVG). “Many of you were with us during the events of Orcs and Humans, Tides of Darkness and Beyond the Dark Portal. The events of those came predicated what’s happening in the modern era of WoW.  “There’s a huge amount of players that never lived those events, met those characters or had those adventures. As we’re thinking about where to go, we're realizing that some of the baddest dudes ever in the Warcraft franchise almost had their way and conquered the entirety of the Eastern Kingdoms. If they had, history would have taken a turn.

“What if those dark days could come again, what if those vicious villains could threaten our homes again. The conflict coming will be the Alliance’s finest hour. Horde, you’ve had to live with the consequences of Thrall’s disappointments, with Garosh’s reign of terror, but in the face of all that you have a chance at a new start, to redefine yourselves in this brave new world.  “But, as is often true, to forge a brighter future, sometimes you must confront the ghosts of the past.”

The expansion includes the new Draenor zone, the level cap will be raised to 100, it will include new dungeons and raids, hundreds of new quests, the ability to build and upgrade garrisons, and new character models will be introduced. (Source: Wowhead: http://www.wowhead.com/news=223446/warlords-of-draenor-what-we-know-so-far )

The biggest fuss in The Legacy Guild seems to be about the new "garrisons!  " In Warlords of Draenor, you’ll make a permanent impact on the world with a Garrison: your own personal fortress that you build, staff, and manage. You’ll customize your Garrison’s layout, appearance, and gameplay effects, and attract followers to operate it. The Garrison allows World of Warcraft players to own a larger part of the world than ever before, and opens up a wide variety of interesting gameplay decisions—with as much or as little micromanagement as you wish.
Your Garrison exists seamlessly in the world, but you won’t need to go into an instance portal to visit your home base—as you travel through Draenor, you’ll see your Garrison looming on the horizon

Followers are NPCs (non-player characters) that you recruit to join your Garrison. You’ll send them on missions to improve your Garrison and earn loot for your character. You can also allocate them to complete tasks—things like crafting or gathering resources, which they’ll do whether you’re online or offline.
Followers have a character level, an item level, and traits that affect missions and tasks. For example, if they have the Mining trait, you’ll be able to assign them to a Mine in your Garrison to gather resources for you. There are common, uncommon, rare, and epic followers, and their rarity affects the number of traits they can have.
To run an effective Garrison, you’ll first need to recruit followers. Some will make their own way to your base, but you can also upgrade your Inn to attract more followers. You can also win followers to your cause as you progress through the game’s story, when completing quests, or simply by coughing up the right sum of gold to hire mercenaries.
When they’re not away on missions, your followers hold down posts at your Garrison, where you can visit them at any time. A major goal for the Garrison system is for followers to be dynamic and interesting—for example, if a follower fails a mission that takes place in a local dungeon, they might be taken prisoner; the next time you adventure in that dungeon, you’ll be able to rescue them."

12/6/12 - Sheehy -Scores of great learning moments emerging from discussions about The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey.  First one you might like to try on with your students is just to ask them, "Since  Peter Jackson is making three movies out of the one book, where do you think the first, An Unexpected Journey, will conclude?"

11/26/12 - Sheehy - WooT!  On December 14th the heroes from House Enigma will be going on a field trip to attend the premier showing of THE HOBBIT at the IMAX Theater!

Director Peter Jackson has published great video blogs documenting the entire movie production process from start to finish and today's really got us jazzed about the premier!

11/20/12 - Gillispie - It's official.  PCS' WoWinSchool Programs will migrate to GuildWars 2 over the course of the next year!  Watch out Tyria!  Here we come!

11/14/12 - Gillispie - Another great writeup on the WoWInSchool Project by The Gamification Company - World of Warcraft in the World of Education.

11/2/12 - Gillispie - Check out this recent article by Todd Finley about our program from Edutopia - Teach At-Risk Students in Leadership and Language Arts with... World of Warcraft?

10/31/12 - Sheehy - Suffern Middle School has 35 members in WoW in School this year, ten of whom are playing GuildWars 2.  Some intense "compare and contrast" discussions await us in the future!    Also - we have designed an overarching question to guide our culminating project this year.   After watching the Mists of Pandaria trailer...

...we focused in on the question, "What is worth fighting for?"  Our Heroes will be responding to that question in whatever medium, or manner they choose--whether it be machinima, dance, photos, music, painting, written or drama.   Excited to see what they come up with!!

9/20/2012 - Gillispie - The WoWinSchool Project was featured in THE Journal's September 2012 issue - "WoWing Language Arts"

9/19/2012 - Gillispie - Over half the WoWinSchool curriculum in 3DGameLab is now updated to accommodate GuildWars 2!

9/11/2012 - Gillispie - WoWinSchool is officially going multi-game!  We've always hoped that the program would serve as a model for other schools wishing to do similar projects, however, World of Warcraft subscriptions can be cost-prohibitive.  Other programs have dabbled in the use of Lord of the Rings Online using our curriculum in the past.  With the emergence of Guild Wars 2, a new, viable alternative has emerged with no subscription costs!  Guild Wars 2 also places an emphasis on personal story which aligns beautifully with the WoWinSchool curriculum.

LeVonda Vickery of RIver's Edge Academy Charter School has received a grant from The Ludus Project to launch a Guild Wars 2-based project that follows the WoWinSchool curriculum.  LeVonda and I have been in close communication about her awesome project and I'm excited to announce that her Heroes and ours will be connected through a common guild!  We're excited that the student guild, The Legacy, is growing and is moving into new worlds!

9/11/2012 - Gillispie - Programs at Cape Fear Middle with Mr. Chad Cooper as Lorekeeper, and West Pender Middle with Ms. Sara Toothman as Lorekeeper are fully underway.  We have roughly 30 new Heroes in The Legacy Guild.  We'll have our first guild induction ceremonies in the coming days!

8/16/2012 - Gillispie - Whew!  After a long day, all student WoW accounts have been created for West Pender Middle School!  The guild is growing!!

8/15/2012 - Gillispie - Had a great chat with Lisa Miller of WFAE 90.7 in Charlotte, NC (NPR affiliate) about our game based projects, including WoWinSchool in Pender County.  Check out the story here:  Harnessing The Allure of Video Games in the Classroom.  (listen to the story by clicking the link in the upper left)

7/7/2012 - Sheehy A must see!  James Gee at Games for Change NYC 2012

7/6/2012  Sheehy - So much great interest generated from our ISTE Workshop and presentations (Lucas you were sorely missed!)  Look for an article and video soon from THE Journal and many new schools  using the WoW in School Curriculum.  Many thanks to the Cognitive Dissonance Guild members who helped facilitate the workshop!

6/13/12 - Gillispie - Creativity begets creativity...

So, our WoWInSchool and Minecraft projects are spawning new, creative game-based learning projects in our schools!  Take a look at Sara Toothman's Kickstarter project to bring more game-based learning to her students at West Pender Middle School!  While you're at it, why not pledge $5 to make it happen?

4/3/2012 - Gillispie - Excited to announce that we'll officially be adding our second school in PCS to the WoWinSchool Project!  The West Pender Middle Warriors (aptly named) will be joining The Legacy in the 2012-2013 school year!  Grats to WPMS!

3/26/2012 - Sheehy - Had serious peer review of my "new" WowinSchool Quests for 3D Game Lab.  The students in House Enigma read and informed me what was unimportant, trivial, and irrelevant (read: "boring") and what should be inserted in the quests instead.  So glad I remembered my own mantra, "ASK THE STUDENTS!"  The next 3D Game Lab "Teacher Camp" begins April 2 and anyone interested can sign up at: http://3dgamelab.org.shivtr.com/

2/22/2012 - Gillispie - Woot!  America Now picked up our WoWinSchool story!  Grats to our awesome kids!

11/11/2011 - Sheehy - Working furiously to keep up with students completing their quests in 3D GameLab  from HOME on their day off!  Also had an exciting conversation with a school in Canada  planning on joining us ASAP.  More info to follow!

10/24/2011 - Gillispie - Excited to be talking with folks from Edutopia today about our exciting project and the exciting things that our learners are doing in the classroom!

10/3/2011 - Sheehy - Had our first meeting today!  Twenty seats filled and a waiting list.  My students logged into 3D GameLab, and The Legacy Guild Site (TY Lucas!)  and never once did I hear, "When are we gonna play?" but instead, "Can we do this from home too?" and "Will there be more quests soon?"  Good news: I have four FEMALE WARRIORS this year!  Hooray for the HEROINES!

9/26/2011 - Gillispie - Starting to add student work from this year's project to the wiki.  Check out Riddle Poems for some WoW-based riddles/poetry from our learners.  Also, check out, Becoming Lore Keepers, on School Library Journal's website for tips on starting a WoWinSchool project in your library!

9/21/2011 - Gillispie - Woot!  Excited to announce we're expanding our WoWinSchool Program to a second school here in Pender County!  We'll hopefully have new Heroes to add to the guild ranks within the next two months!

9/7/2011 - Gillispie - The 2011-2012 WoWinSchool Project is underway!  We have 15 new Heroes who've joined the cause at Cape Fear Middle and others from around the world joining soon!  Our curriculum is actively being added to 3DGameLab and our learners are loving it!  I've created "Patch Notes" to explain updates to the curriculum as we move it into 3DGameLab.  They are publicly viewable here, if you're interested in seeing the development process.

8/8/2011 - Gillispie - A big thanks to the folks at Shivtr.com for supporting The Legacy, our student WoWinSchool guild!

8/8/2011 - Gillispie - Found this feedback on a blog today - "I heard these teachers present this at ISTE conference, and it was one of the most inspirational sessions I saw.  I only went because my son is a big gamer.  Now I want to start a club at my school.  This wiki has everything you need to know about what they did.  The pdf file is huge and has tips, hints and lessons tied to 8th grade language arts common standards." - (http://lwptechacademy.blogspot.com/) - Glad to spark interest!  :)

8/5/2011 - Gillispie - Added a Tutorials for Teachers section with videos introducing them to WoW!

8/4/2011 - Gillispie - The 3DGameLab for Educators is underway!  We're excited to be involved in this exciting project from Boise State!  Peggy and I are hosting a three week introduction to using WoW with students as part of the camp.  We're having a blast!

8/4/2011 - Gillispie - Peggy and I will be presenting again at Games in Education 2011 in New York!  This is a great conference and truly exemplifies the place where "the rubber meets the road" that we need more of when it comes to using video games in the classroom.  If you haven't registered, there's still time!

8/4/2011 - Gillispie - So many things going on!  First our presentation at ISTE 2011 was incredible.  We received very positive feedback from the audience and the general consensus seemed to be, "Yes, we really can do this and here's nearly everything we need to get started."  There were many great informal conversations about the project throughout as interest builds.  We're hoping that more schools will be joining us soon!

6/17/2011 - Gillispie - After months of work, our World of Warcraft curriculum is here.  As with all things education-related, consider it a Beta version.  We're still learning, tweaking, and coming up with new ideas.  Craig Lawson and I are really excited to share this with anyone who wants to use it.  It contains just about everything you need to duplicate our program.  Inside you'll find all of the learning quests we created, aligned to 8th grade Common Core standards, and with instructor notes and relevant online resources.  Since it was originally designed in Moodle, it should be simple to transfer into a Moodle shell of your own or any other platform.  We're releasing it under a Creative Commons Non-Commercial Attribution License.  If you decide to implement a similar program, let us know.  We want to grow this community!

6/10/2011 - Gillispie - Our kids have finally wrapped up their machinima projects!  They did great work, especially considering they'd none had any prior experience with filming and editing.  Check out their awesome movie intro/trailers on the Student Machinima page.

5/18/2011 - Gillispie - Student work is underway on their Machinima Projects.  Students randomly drew a number of story elements and are creating movie trailers for a film that incorporates them.  Hoping to make the June 1st deadline for submission to the ISTE Machinima Festival.

5/4/2011 - Gillispie - Sharing Pender County Schools' work with gaming and learning today at MEGA (Middle Educators Global Activities) in Raleigh.  Here's my handout.

4/16/2011 - Gillispie - Just wrapped up another day of curriculum development with Craig Lawson for our WoWinSchool:  A Hero's Journey language arts course.  We have completed 25 student learning quests and only have a few more to go.  We are on track for a June release!

3/31/2011 - Gillispie - A couple of late announcements here, but, the WoWinSchool Project will be presented at the 2011 ISTE conference in Philadelphia, PA.  Our session will be Wednesday, June 29th at 8:30 AM.  Craig, Peggy, myself, and hopefully Diane Lewis will will be sharing our incredible experiences with this initiative.  Find out more about our session here.  Also, the WoWinSchool Project was featured in episode 18 of the GroupQuest Podcast.  You can listen to it here.

3/19/2011 - Gillispie - Several wiki updates today.  Added links to related projects, Minecraft In School (early development), and Saving The Universe - LEGO Universe (Wiki) from Marianne Malmstrom.  Also added links to four videos from Seminole County's WoWinSchool Project to the Videos page.  A big thanks to Diane Lewis for sharing her learner's responses!  Also check out her presentation "When School Is WoW!" in Presentations.  It was incredible.

12/17/2010 - Sheehy - This is just too cool not to mention! Think about the collaborative opportunites. Thin about the complexities of this CORPORATION.  What position would you aspire to?  Designer? Artist? Coder? Musician? Writer? Historian? The list goes on and on....

10/25/2010 - Gillispie - Getting the Alienware laptops imaged has been challenging.  Our awesome technicians managed to get a viable image (that includes all of the Alienware UI perks and mods) and the most up-to-date version of WoW created.  Hopefully, we'll be pushing out to the laptops soon.

10/21/2010 - Gillispie - The Aliens have landed!  Our Alienware m11x laptops arrived today.  So far, they are amazing.  Our students are going to be really excited about the customized lighting, not to mention how well they will run World of Warcraft.  I've spent the biggest part of the day getting them inventoried and helping our awesome technical department here in Pender County Schools build an image for them.  The image is mostly built.  Now, we're just downloading/installing World of Warcraft.  I'll add more un-boxing pictures soon!  And, again, a huge thanks to the Breneman Jaech Foundation for making this possible!!

10/18/2010 - Gillispie - Virtual field trip for our learners this week -- BlizzCon 2010.  Our kids will be watching the live stream during their class period.  Download the Parent Update Letter and Permission Form.

10/18/2010 - Gillispie - "The ground is shaking!" (student) - Oh yeah, Cataclysm is coming!  Love that our learners get to be a part of a live, in-game event!

10/11/2010 - Gillispie - Our students have put great effort into submitting mission statements for their guild, The Legacy.  Check out the incredible work they've done on the Write A Guild Mission Statement page.

10/6/2010 - Gillispie - I'm really excited and pleased to announce that Pender County Schools has received a grant, supporting the WoWinSchool Project, from the Breneman Jaech Foundation!  This grant will support continued development of the WoWinSchool:  A Hero's Journey curriculum and efforts to expand the project to serve more students in the district!  More news to come!

Reflections on Play, Pedagogy, and World of Warcraft in Educause Magazine

By Landon K. Pirius and Gill Creel

Great Article!   Key Takeaways:

  • The video game World of Warcraft was the text studied, the laboratory, and the classroom for the online course "Warcraft: Culture, Gender, and Identity" at Inver Hills Community College.
  • The overarching goals of the course involved using the game's immersive environment, learning strategies, and culture to encourage and support student learning.
  • In addition to achieving the intended course outcomes, students successfully transferred the concepts they learned between the real and the virtual worlds.

(9/27/2010) - Gillispie - Very excited to welcome Seminole County School System, Florida, to the project.

Absolutely. Right now I'm waiting on my funding to come through, so I've not yet implemented the project. Once it does, I'll be using this space to share what we're doing!

Thanks a lot Lucas for your generosity, giving me a reader status in your wiki. I'm a Mexican TEFL teacher in a junior high school in Oaxaca, Mexico and I'd love to include games in my language teaching. I'm also a PBwiki user! Thanks a lot!
